SAP ECC was designed on run on any third-party database of the user’s choice. SAP ECC was succeeded by SAP S/4HANA that uses SAP’s in-built memory database called HANA.

SAP ECC is an umbrella term covering SAP’s functional and technical components that constitute its ERP system. In simple terms, SAP ERP is a Licensing Model & SAP ECC is an Installable Unit. This means that you can actually install ECC, but not ERP.

SAP is planning to sunset ECC and move all its users to S/4HANA. The company has announced they’ll discontinue support for SAP ECC after 2025.
